Industrial Storage Tanks Built for Safety, Durability, and Compliance

Choosing the right storage tank affects plant safety, product quality, and long-term operating cost. R&D Therm is an ASME U stamp holder and a trusted pressure vessel and storage tank manufacturer in India. We handle the design, engineering, fabrication, and supply of custom tanks for chemical, pharmaceutical, oil & gas, food processing, and many other industries.

Every tank is built to your media, capacity, pressure, temperature, and site conditions and to recognised international codes. Our range also includes coded and non-coded pressure vessels and cryogenic pressure vessels.

Types of Storage Tanks We Manufacture

Atmospheric Storage Tanks

These tanks store liquids at or near atmospheric pressure and are the most common choice for bulk liquid storage.

  • Typical contents: water, chemicals, oils, solvents

  • Design references: API 650 and ASME (as applicable), with structural steel plate such as IS 2062

Vertical Storage Tanks

Vertical tanks suit large-capacity storage where plot space is limited.

  • Fixed roof tanks (cone and dome roof) for general liquid storage

  • Floating roof tanks to reduce vapor loss when storing volatile products

Horizontal Storage Tanks

Horizontal tanks work well for compact layouts, skid-mounted systems, and smaller volumes.

  • Available as above-ground or underground tanks

  • Easy to transport, install, and relocate

Key Design Features

All our tanks are designed to API 650, ASME Section VIII, and relevant Indian standards, as applicable to the project. The design basis covers operating pressure, design temperature, media properties, corrosion allowance, and wind and seismic loads.

Shell and bottom design: Plate thickness is optimized for hydrostatic head and service conditions. Bottom plates are sloped for complete drainage. Annular plates are added on large-diameter tanks to spread load at the foundation. All welds follow the applicable code.

Roof design: We select cone, dome, or floating roofs based on the service. The design accounts for live, maintenance, wind, and snow loads. Pressure-vacuum relief valves and vents prevent overpressure and vacuum during filling and emptying.

Nozzles and manholes: Inlet, outlet, drain, overflow, vent, and instrument nozzles are sized and positioned for smooth operation. Reinforcement is provided where the code requires it. Manholes give safe access for inspection, cleaning and maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between a storage tank and a pressure vessel?

A storage tank holds liquids at or near atmospheric pressure. A pressure vessel holds liquids, vapors, or gases at pressures significantly above or below atmospheric. Tanks are typically designed to API 650, while pressure vessels follow ASME Section VIII.

2. Which standards do you follow for storage tank design?

We design to API 650 for atmospheric tanks and ASME Section VIII where pressure applies. A structural plate is selected per standards such as IS 2062. The exact code is confirmed during the design stage based on your project requirements.

3. Should I choose a vertical or horizontal storage tank?

Vertical tanks suit large volumes and limited floor space. Horizontal tanks suit smaller volumes, skid-mounted systems, underground installation, and easier transport. Our engineers can recommend the better fit based on capacity, site layout, and the stored product.

4. What materials are used to build storage tanks?

Material depends on the stored media. Options include carbon steel, stainless steel, and other corrosion-resistant alloys. Food and pharma tanks use hygienic, food-grade materials. For acids and alkalis, we select materials that resist corrosion.

5. Do you manufacture tanks for flammable and hazardous liquids?

Yes. We build tanks for fuels, solvents, paints, and chemicals with suitable venting, pressure-vacuum relief, and safety provisions. Floating roof designs are available to reduce vapor loss with volatile products.

6. What information do you need for a quotation?

Please share the stored product, required capacity, design pressure and temperature, tank orientation (vertical or horizontal), site location, and any applicable code or client specification. Drawings or datasheets help us respond faster.
